If your stairlift in Widnes has stopped working, call us. We will take your details and put you through to an independent engineer covering WA8, who will diagnose the problem and explain the cost before starting any work.

Widnes homes and staircases

Widnes sits on the north bank of the Mersey in the borough of Halton. Its older streets near the town centre are mainly Victorian and Edwardian terraces with straight, steep stairs. Areas such as Ditton, Hough Green, Farnworth and Upton have a lot of interwar and post-war semis, along with newer estates and bungalows.

With so many straight staircases, straight stairlifts are the most common type here. They are usually quicker to repair, with parts for popular models widely available. If your stairs turn, see curved stairlift repair.

What goes wrong most often

The lift does not move. Check the key or power switch, that it is parked on the charging point, that the seat is swivelled back and locked, and that the remote has working batteries. See our guide to a stairlift not working.

It is slow or stops halfway. Worn batteries are a common cause. Most lifts use two 12V batteries that typically last a few years. See stairlift battery replacement.

It beeps. Some beeps are a reminder to charge; others are fault codes. Read our stairlift beeping guide.

It stops on its own. A safety edge may be touching something. Clear the stairs; if it carries on, it needs an engineer.

Urgent breakdowns

If someone is stuck upstairs or on the lift, tell us when you call. Engineers will try to prioritise urgent jobs where possible. If anyone is hurt or at risk, call 999. See emergency stairlift repair.

Servicing

Manufacturers generally recommend a service at least once a year for home stairlifts. See stairlift servicing.

Brands and council lifts

The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not the manufacturer. If Halton Borough Council, a housing provider or a manufacturer warranty covers your lift, contact them first.

Remote controls and call stations

Most stairlifts come with two kinds of remote. A call-send remote, usually fixed to the wall at the top and bottom of the stairs, lets you bring the lift to you if it is parked at the other end. A handheld remote may also be supplied, and the carriage has its own control on the armrest.

If the lift works from the armrest but not from a remote, the remote is the likely cause. Start by replacing its batteries, as remotes often use small coin or AAA batteries. If that does not help, the remote may need re-pairing with the lift, or replacing.

If none of the controls work, the problem is with the lift itself rather than the remotes. Check the key or power switch and the charging point, and then call an engineer.
