Wallasey homes

Wallasey sits at the north-east tip of the Wirral, with the Mersey on one side and the Irish Sea on the other. Its housing includes Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas around Liscard, Egremont and New Brighton, interwar semis across much of the town, and plenty of bungalows and flats, including some along the promenade.

Terraces and semis usually have straight stairs and straight stairlifts, which are generally simpler to repair. Larger older houses may have turns that need a curved lift; see curved stairlift repair.

Sea air and charging problems

Homes close to the promenade and the seafront at New Brighton can be exposed to damp, salty air. Over time this can affect electrical contacts, including the charging points on the stairlift rail. If your lift beeps when parked or does not seem to hold charge, the contacts or batteries may need attention. See our stairlift beeping guide and stairlift battery replacement.

Common faults

  1. Slow travel or stopping partway, often worn batteries
  2. Beeping when parked, often a charging issue
  3. The lift will not move because the seat is not locked or a safety edge is pressed
  4. Remotes not working, sometimes just flat remote batteries

Try the safe checks in our guide to a stairlift not working before calling. Please do not remove covers.

Servicing

Manufacturers generally recommend a service at least once a year. A service can catch corroded contacts, worn batteries and tired parts before they leave you stuck. See stairlift servicing.

Downsizing or moving

If you no longer need a stairlift, we can pass on enquiries for stairlift removal.

Brands and council lifts

The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not the manufacturer. If Wirral Council, a housing provider or a manufacturer warranty covers your lift, contact them first.

When a stairlift has not been used for a while

Sometimes a stairlift sits unused for weeks, for example while someone is in hospital, staying with family or after a house has been empty. When it is needed again, it may not work straight away.

The most common reason is flat batteries. If the lift was left off its charging point, or the power was switched off, the batteries may have drained completely. Make sure the lift is parked on its charging point with the power on and leave it to charge. Check the manual for how long it needs.

If it still will not move after charging, or it beeps or shows a code, call an engineer. Batteries that have been fully drained for a long time often need replacing, and the engineer can check the rest of the lift at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover New Brighton?

Yes. We take enquiries from New Brighton and the rest of CH45, plus Liscard, Egremont and Seacombe in CH44.

My stairlift beeps when it is parked. Is that serious?

Often it means the lift is not charging properly. Check it is parked exactly on the charging point and the power is on. If it continues, the contacts or batteries may need an engineer.

Can you remove a stairlift?

Yes. We can pass on enquiries for stairlift removal.

Will I get a price first?

Yes. The engineer should explain the fault and the cost before starting. See our repair cost guide.
