If your stairlift in Garston or Speke has stopped working, call us. We will take a few details and pass the job to an independent engineer who covers L19 and L24. They will tell you what they think the fault is and what it should cost before starting.
Homes in Garston, Grassendale and Speke
This corner of south Liverpool has a real mix of homes. Garston has a lot of Victorian terraces with straight, steep stairs. Grassendale and Cressington, by the river, have larger Victorian houses, some with grand staircases that turn at a half-landing. Speke was largely built as a planned estate from the 1930s and after the war, with semis and terraces, and has newer homes and bungalows too.
That variety means we hear about every kind of stairlift: straight lifts in terraces, curved made-to-measure rails in larger period houses, and lifts in modern homes. The engineers we work with repair all of these. For curved lifts, see curved stairlift repair.
What usually goes wrong
- The lift will not move. Often something simple: the key is off, the seat is not locked, or it is off the charging point. Our guide to a stairlift not working lists safe checks.
- It moves slowly or stops. Batteries are the most common cause. Most lifts use two 12V batteries that typically need replacing every few years. See stairlift battery replacement.
- Beeping or error codes. Some beeps are warnings you can deal with; others need an engineer. Read our stairlift beeping guide.
- Safety edges stopping the lift. These are designed to stop the lift if they touch something. If they trigger with nothing in the way, they need checking.
Bath lifts and other equipment
Some households in the area also have a bath lift or a hoist. We take enquiries for bath lift repair and ceiling hoist repair as well, so you can use one number for all of them.
Servicing and costs
Manufacturers generally recommend a service at least once a year for home stairlifts. See stairlift servicing. For costs, Checkatrade’s Liverpool guide puts typical repairs at around £95 to £162; our cost guide explains more.
Brands
The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not linked to any manufacturer. If Liverpool City Council provided your lift, read our council stairlift repairs guide first.
When two people share one stairlift
In some homes, both partners use the stairlift, or a lift fitted for one person is now used by two. That is fine as long as each person is within the lift’s weight limit, which you can find in the user manual or on a label on the carriage.
What it does mean is more journeys each day. More trips put more wear on the batteries, motor, seat swivel and safety edges, so a lift used by two people may need batteries sooner and benefit more from a regular service.
It also helps if both users know the basics: how to swivel and lock the seat, where the key or switch is, and that the lift must be parked on its charging point after each use. Many stops that look like faults are simply a lift left off charge or a seat not quite locked.

Frequently asked questions
Do you cover Speke as well as Garston?
Yes. We take enquiries from Garston, Grassendale and Cressington in L19, and from across Speke in L24.
My stairlift is in a large old house with a turning staircase. Can it be repaired?
Yes. Curved stairlifts can be repaired by engineers who work on the relevant brand. Parts for curved rails can take longer to source than for straight lifts.
Can you help with a bath lift?
Yes. We can pass on enquiries for bath lift repair.
What should I do if my stairlift stops with someone on it?
Keep them calm and safe and do not try to force the lift. If anyone is hurt or at risk, call 999. Otherwise call us and explain it is urgent; see emergency stairlift repair.
