On the Wirral side of the Mersey, Birkenhead has a lot of homes with stairlifts, from Victorian villas in Oxton to terraces in Tranmere. If your stairlift has stopped working, call us. We will pass the job to an independent engineer who covers CH41, CH42 and CH43, who will diagnose the fault and give you a price before starting.

Birkenhead homes and stairs

Birkenhead grew rapidly in the 19th century, and its housing reflects that. Oxton and Claughton have many large Victorian villas and terraces, much of Oxton being a conservation area, with tall, long staircases that often turn at a half-landing. Tranmere and Rock Ferry have a mix of Victorian terraces, larger older houses and post-war homes, while Prenton has many interwar and post-war semis and detached houses.

Large period homes often need curved, made-to-measure stairlifts. These are more complex than straight lifts, with bends in the rail and more moving parts in the carriage, so it pays to have an engineer who works on your brand. See curved stairlift repair. Semis and terraces usually have straight stairs and straight lifts.

Common repair jobs

  • Batteries: slow travel, stopping partway or beeping when parked often point to worn batteries. See stairlift battery replacement.
  • Beeping and error codes: read our stairlift beeping guide for what to check safely.
  • Curved rail issues: jerky movement or noise on bends should be checked before it gets worse.
  • Safety edges, seats and footrests: worn or misaligned parts can stop the lift as a safety precaution.

Before you call

Check the key or power switch, that the lift is on its charging point, that the seat is swivelled back and locked, and the remote batteries. Please do not remove covers. Our guide to a stairlift not working has more.

Servicing

Manufacturers generally recommend at least one service a year for home stairlifts, which is especially worthwhile on curved lifts. See stairlift servicing.

Brands and council lifts

The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not the manufacturer. If Wirral Council, a housing provider or a manufacturer warranty covers your lift, contact them first.

Getting parts for older curved lifts

Curved stairlifts are made to measure. The rail is bent to fit one staircase, and the carriage is designed to travel round its bends. That makes them very effective, but it also affects repairs.

Common parts, such as batteries, remotes and some safety edges, are often easy to get. Brand-specific parts, such as circuit boards or drive components for older or discontinued models, can take longer to source, and occasionally an engineer may suggest a reconditioned part.

If your curved lift is older, ask the engineer early on whether parts are available for your model and roughly how long they take. If a key part is no longer available, they can explain your options honestly, so you can plan rather than be caught out.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Oxton and Prenton?

Yes. We take enquiries from Oxton, Claughton and Prenton in CH43, as well as Tranmere and Rock Ferry in CH42 and central Birkenhead in CH41.

Can you repair a curved stairlift in a Victorian house?

Yes. The engineers we work with repair curved lifts from the main brands. Parts for curved rails can take longer to source than straight ones.

Do you cover the rest of the Wirral?

We list Birkenhead and Wallasey, but call us and we will check whether an engineer covers your part of the Wirral.

How much does a repair cost?

It depends on the fault and parts. As a guide, Checkatrade puts typical Liverpool-area repairs at around £95 to £162. See our repair cost guide.
