Bath Lift Repair in Liverpool

A bath lift that won't rise, charge or recline can leave someone stuck in the bath. Here's what usually goes wrong and how to get it sorted.

  • Straight & curved stairlifts
  • All major makes
  • Liverpool & Merseyside
  • No-obligation quotes

A bath lift lowers you gently into the bath and raises you back up afterwards. Most run on a rechargeable battery in the handset, and many include a safety feature that stops the lift lowering unless the battery has enough charge to raise you back up. When they go wrong, the cause is often simple, but it is worth getting checked before using the lift again.

Common bath lift problems

  • Won’t lower: often a low battery. Many bath lifts deliberately won’t go down unless there’s enough charge to come back up.
  • Won’t rise: battery, handset or motor fault.
  • Handset not charging: charger, cable or worn battery.
  • Backrest won’t recline or return: a recline mechanism or motor fault.
  • Suction cups not gripping: worn cups, or a bath surface that isn’t clean and dry.
  • Covers or seat damaged: these can often be replaced as separate parts.

Safe checks you can do

  1. Charge the handset fully using the supplied charger, away from the bathroom.
  2. Check the handset connection to the lift is secure and dry.
  3. Clean the suction cups and the bath with warm water, then re-seat the lift.
  4. Check the manual for any reset procedure.

If someone is in the bath and the lift won’t rise, keep them warm, drain the water, and help them out safely, with two people if needed. If you can’t do it safely, call for help.

Repair or replace?

Bath lifts are less expensive than stairlifts, so the decision between repair and replacement is closer. Handsets, batteries, covers and suction cups are often available as parts. Motor or recline faults on an older bath lift may make replacement better value. A local engineer can advise.

Council-provided bath lifts

If your bath lift was supplied by the council or an occupational therapist, contact them first, as they normally handle repairs and replacement. See our council equipment guide.

Other mobility equipment

If you also have a ceiling hoist, through-floor lift or stairlift, one engineer may be able to look at everything in a single visit. See stairlift servicing.

We help with bath lift repairs across Liverpool, including Aigburth, Walton, Maghull and Widnes.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my bath lift go down?

Many bath lifts won't lower unless the battery has enough charge to lift you back up. Charge the handset fully and try again.

Can I replace a bath lift handset?

Handsets and batteries are often available as parts. An engineer can check whether the handset or the lift is the problem.

Is it worth repairing a bath lift?

It depends on the fault and age. Battery, handset and cover faults are often worth fixing; motor faults on older lifts may not be.

My bath lift came from the council. Who repairs it?

Contact the council or occupational therapy service first.

How do I stop my bath lift slipping?

Clean the suction cups and bath with warm water, dry them and re-seat the lift. Worn suction cups can be replaced.
