Walton is a busy, long-established part of north Liverpool, and stairlifts are a common sight in its terraces and semis. When one breaks down, call us. We will take your details and pass the job to an independent engineer who covers L4 and L9, so you can get a diagnosis and a clear price.

Walton housing and stairlifts

The streets around County Road and Walton Vale are mainly Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many with steep, straight stairs. Further out, Orrell Park and Fazakerley have more interwar and post-war semis and council-built homes, and there are bungalows and sheltered flats across the area.

Straight staircases suit straight stairlifts, which are generally the simplest to repair. Where a terrace has a turn at the top, a curved lift may have been fitted, and those are made to measure. The engineers we work with handle both. For curved lifts, see curved stairlift repair.

The faults we hear about most

  • Lift not moving. Check the key or switch, that the lift is on charge, and the seat is locked. Our guide on a stairlift not working explains more.
  • Slow or stopping halfway. Often worn batteries. Read about stairlift battery replacement.
  • Beeping. Usually a charging, seat-position or safety-edge issue, but sometimes a fault code.
  • Remote handsets. Often a flat battery in the remote, but sometimes the handset or receiver needs replacing.

If someone is stuck

If someone cannot get up or down the stairs, or has been left on a stopped lift, tell us when you call. Engineers will try to prioritise urgent cases where available. If anyone is hurt or at risk, call 999 first. See our emergency stairlift repair page for more.

What a repair might cost

In Liverpool, Checkatrade puts typical stairlift repairs at around £95 to £162, with an average of about £122, before parts such as batteries or boards. Our repair cost guide explains what affects the price.

Council-provided lifts

Many homes in north Liverpool have lifts provided by Liverpool City Council. If yours is still under the council warranty, repairs go through the council’s provider. See council stairlift repairs in Liverpool.

Brands

The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not the manufacturer.

Hinged rails in narrow hallways

In many Walton terraces the bottom stair is close to the front door or an internal doorway. To stop the rail blocking the hallway, some stairlifts are fitted with a hinged rail: the bottom section folds up out of the way, either by hand or with a motor.

Hinged rails are clever, but they add moving parts. If the hinge does not fold or unfold fully, the lift may refuse to move, because it is designed not to travel onto a rail that is not locked in place. Common signs are the lift stopping near the bottom, or a beep when it reaches the hinge.

Do not force a hinge that will not move. Check that nothing is in the way, such as a doormat, shoes or a bag, and try again. If it still will not move, it needs an engineer. Mention the hinged rail when you call so they can plan for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Fazakerley and Orrell Park?

Yes. We take enquiries from across L4 and L9, including Orrell Park and Fazakerley.

My stairlift stops at the same point every time. Why?

It could be an obstruction, a safety edge, a battery problem or a fault in the rail. An engineer can find the cause. Do not try to force the lift past that point.

Can I get a stairlift removed?

Yes, we can pass on enquiries for stairlift removal if you no longer need it.

Is a council stairlift my responsibility to repair?

Usually not while it is under the council warranty. Contact the council's provider first, as explained in our council repairs guide.
