Postcodes covered: L31
Maghull is a quiet commuter town north of Liverpool with a large number of older residents, so stairlifts are common. When yours stops working, call us. We will take a few details and pass the job to an independent engineer who covers L31, who will diagnose the fault and give you a price before starting work.
Maghull homes and stairlifts
Much of Maghull was built from the 1950s to the 1970s, with plenty of semis, detached homes and bungalows. Lydiate and Melling have similar housing, with some older properties and cottages, and there are newer developments around the town as well.
Post-war semis usually have straight stairs, and many have a straight stairlift. These are generally straightforward to repair. Some homes have a turn or winder at the top or bottom and need a curved, made-to-measure lift; see curved stairlift repair.
Common faults in L31
Beeping. Many calls start with a lift that beeps. Often it is not charging or the seat is not locked in place, but some beeps are fault codes. Read our stairlift beeping guide.
Slow or stopping. If your lift is slower than it used to be, or stops before reaching the top, the batteries may be worn. Most lifts use two 12V batteries, typically replaced every few years. See stairlift battery replacement.
Will not move. Check the key or switch, the charging point, the seat position and the remote batteries. If none of that helps, it needs an engineer.
Servicing
A regular service helps prevent breakdowns. Manufacturers generally recommend at least once a year for a home stairlift. Our stairlift servicing page explains what is usually checked, and our guide on how often to service a stairlift explains why it matters.
Repair, replace or reconditioned?
Most faults are worth repairing. If your lift is old and parts are hard to find, the engineer may suggest options such as a reconditioned stairlift, usually cheaper than a new one.
Brands and council lifts
The engineers we work with repair Stannah, Handicare, Acorn, Brooks, Otolift and TK Home Solutions lifts. We are independent and not linked to the manufacturers. If Sefton Council supplied your lift, or it is under a manufacturer warranty, contact them first.
Second-hand lifts and lifts bought privately
Some households buy a used stairlift privately or inherit one when they move into a house. These lifts can work well, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
A straight stairlift can sometimes be reused on a different staircase if the rail is cut to the right length, but a curved rail is made for one particular staircase and usually cannot be moved to another. If a lift has been moved or fitted by someone without the right experience, it may not be installed correctly.
If you have a lift with no paperwork or service history, it is sensible to have an engineer check it before relying on it. They can check the installation, test the batteries and safety features, and tell you whether parts are still available for that model.

Frequently asked questions
Do you cover Lydiate and Melling?
Yes. Both are in L31 and we take enquiries from across the district.
My stairlift beeps all the time. What should I do?
First check it is parked on its charging point and the power is on. If it keeps beeping or shows an error code, it needs an engineer. See our beeping guide.
How much does a stairlift service cost?
It depends on the engineer and the lift. Ask for a price when you call; the engineer will confirm it before starting.
Can I buy a reconditioned stairlift?
Yes. We can pass on enquiries for reconditioned stairlifts, which are usually cheaper than new.
