Stairlift Battery Problems: Signs and Fixes

Batteries are behind many stairlift breakdowns. Learn the warning signs, what you can safely check, and when the batteries need replacing.

Most modern stairlifts run on batteries rather than straight from the mains. This means the lift keeps working in a power cut and the rail does not carry mains electricity. It also means that batteries are one of the most common reasons a stairlift slows down, beeps or stops.

How stairlift batteries work

Most stairlifts use two 12V batteries in the chair or carriage. They charge when the chair is parked at a charging point on the rail, usually at the top and bottom of the stairs. The charger is plugged into a normal wall socket.

If the chair is left between charging points, or the wall socket is switched off, the batteries slowly run down as you use the lift.

Signs of battery problems

  • the lift beeps when parked or when you try to use it
  • it runs more slowly than usual
  • it stops part way and then works again after a rest
  • it works in the morning but struggles by the evening
  • it does not move at all, even with the power on
  • a battery warning light or code appears on the display

Safe checks you can do

1. Check the wall socket

Make sure the stairlift plug is in and switched on. This is the most common cause of flat batteries, often after cleaning.

2. Park at a charging point

Always send the chair right to the end of the rail after use. If it stopped part way, try sending it to the top or bottom so it can charge.

3. Leave it to charge

If the batteries have run down, leave the lift on charge for several hours, ideally overnight, then try again.

4. Check for warnings

Note any beeps or codes. Our stairlift beeping guide explains common signals.

Do not open the battery cover or try to change the batteries yourself. Stairlift batteries are heavy, must be the right type, and need to be fitted and connected correctly.

How long do stairlift batteries last?

Batteries typically need replacing every few years, commonly between 2 and 5 years. How long they last depends on:

  • how often the lift is used
  • whether it is always parked on charge
  • whether the batteries have been run completely flat in the past
  • the age and condition of the charger

If your batteries are more than a few years old and you are seeing the signs above, they are likely due for replacement.

Power cuts and stairlifts

One advantage of battery stairlifts is that they usually keep working for a while during a power cut, as long as the batteries were charged. After a power cut, check the wall socket is still switched on and that the lift is charging again. If it beeps or will not charge once the power is back, the charger or batteries may need checking.

Old batteries can damage your routine

When batteries start to fail, the lift often works in the morning and then struggles later in the day. People sometimes get used to this and work around it, for example by resting the lift. It is better to replace weak batteries early, because a lift that suddenly stops part way up the stairs is far more inconvenient than a booked battery change.

When to call an engineer

Call an engineer if:

  • the lift still struggles after a full night on charge
  • it keeps losing charge even though it is always parked correctly
  • the charging point or charger seems faulty
  • there is a battery warning that will not clear

An engineer can test the batteries and the charging system to find out whether you need new batteries or whether the fault is elsewhere. See stairlift battery replacement for what the job involves.

Costs

Battery replacement is usually a straightforward job. Checkatrade’s Liverpool cost guide puts typical stairlift repairs at about £95 to £162, with an average of around £122; the price of batteries depends on your model. Our stairlift repair cost guide explains what affects the cost.

Keep your batteries healthy

  • always park the lift at a charging point
  • leave the wall socket switched on
  • avoid letting the batteries run completely flat
  • have the batteries checked at each stairlift service

If your lift has stopped completely, our stairlift not working guide takes you through every safe check.

Frequently asked questions

How long do stairlift batteries last?

Typically a few years, commonly 2 to 5, depending on how much the lift is used and whether it is always parked on charge.

Can I replace stairlift batteries myself?

We do not recommend it. They are heavy, must be the correct type and need connecting properly. An engineer can fit them safely.

Does my stairlift work in a power cut?

Most battery-powered stairlifts will keep working for a while in a power cut, as long as the batteries are charged.

Why does my stairlift stop if I leave it halfway?

It only charges at the charging points. Left part way, the batteries run down. Always send it to the end of the rail.

My stairlift is slow even after charging. What does that mean?

The batteries may be worn out, or there may be a charging fault. Book an engineer to test them.
